| Obverse description | Cast copper cash coin with a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square border. Four Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 道 (Dào) above, 光 (Guāng) below, 通 (Tōng) to the right, and 寶 (Bǎo) to the left, together forming the reign title legend 'Daoguang Tongbao' (Universal Currency of the Daoguang Emperor). The characters are boldly cast in relief within a plain circular field, bounded by a raised outer rim. |
