Obverse description Cast copper cash coin with a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square border. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 道 (Dao) above, 光 (Guang) to the right, 通 (Tong) below, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, together forming the reign title legend 'Dao Guang Tong Bao'. The characters are bold and well-defined in raised relief against a flat field, with a plain outer rim encircling the design.
