Obverse description Four large Chinese characters in standard script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left: 道 (top), 光 (right), 通 (left), 寶 (bottom). The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a plain, wide rim, with no additional ornament in the field. The composition forms the reign-title legend 'Daoguang Tongbao', identifying the issuing emperor and the nature of the coin as current currency.
