| Obverse description | Circular cast coin with a central square perforation, typical of Ming Dynasty cash coinage. Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 崇禎通寶 (Chongzhen Tongbao). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief within a plain inner rim and a raised outer rim. The field is flat and unadorned, with no mint mark or additional symbols on this side. |

| Reverse description | Circular cast coin with a central square perforation mirroring the obverse format. Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are again arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, repeating the obverse legend 崇禎通寶 (Chongzhen Tongbao), read top-to-bottom and right-to-left. This repetition of the inscription on the reverse is the defining characteristic of the northern type. The field is flat with a plain inner rim and a raised outer rim, with no additional mint marks or decorative elements visible. |
