Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a plain raised inner rim and a broader outer rim. Four Chinese clerical-script ideograms are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 開 (Kai), 元 (Yuan), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), constituting the inscription Kaiyuan Tongbao. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat, unadorned field. The coin exhibits the classic Tang-dynasty cash format with well-defined rims and even casting.
