| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a plain inner rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in the cardinal positions reading top, bottom, right, left in clerical script (lishu). The legend 開元通寶 (Kaiyuan Tongbao) is read in the traditional sequence: top to bottom, right to left. The characters are rendered in bold, well-defined strokes characteristic of Tang dynasty casting. The outer rim is slightly raised and plain, enclosing the flat field. |
