Obverse description Cast bronze cash coin bearing the four-character inscription 開元通寶 (Kaiyuan Tongbao) rendered in clerical script (lishu), arranged in cruciform fashion reading top, right, bottom, left around a central square perforation. Each character occupies one quadrant of the coin face, separated by the inner rim of the square hole. The legends are boldly cast with well-defined strokes against a flat, unadorned field, framed by a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole and a raised outer rim at the coin's periphery.
