Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim, flanked by four Chinese characters in clerical script arranged in cruciform fashion and read top to bottom, right to left. The legend 開元通寶 (Kai Yuan Tong Bao) occupies the four cardinal positions around the central aperture. The characters are boldly rendered in relief against a flat field, with a plain raised outer rim encircling the entire face. The coin displays a heavy green patina consistent with age and burial, with moderate surface corrosion across the field.
