Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in clerical script arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 開 (Kai), 元 (Yuan), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao). The characters are rendered in bold relief with well-defined strokes typical of Tang-dynasty cast coinage. A plain raised outer rim borders the flat field, which shows characteristic patination of aged bronze.
