| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a plain raised inner rim and an outer raised border. Four Chinese ideograms in clerical script (lishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top to bottom and right to left: 開 (Kai), 元 (Yuan), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao). The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field, with no additional decorative elements. The coin shows characteristic Tang-dynasty casting style with a broad, flat flan and well-defined rims. |

| Reverse description | Plain field with a central square perforation flanked by raised inner and outer rims. A single Chinese ideogram 廣 (Guang), cast in relief in regular script (kaishu), appears to the right of the central square hole, serving as a mint mark identifying the Guangzhou mint. The reverse is otherwise unadorned, consistent with standard Tang and late Tang anonymous Kaiyuan Tongbao coinage. The surface displays an even green patina with areas of blue-green cuprite consistent with prolonged burial. |
