| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin bearing a central square perforation flanked by four Chinese characters rendered in clerical script (lishu), arranged in cruciform reading order: top (開 Kāi), right (元 Yuán), bottom (通 Tōng), left (寶 Bǎo). The characters are boldly raised within a plain, slightly raised rim, with a broad flat field between the legend and the inner edge of the square hole. The overall style is characteristic of early Tang dynasty casting, with well-defined strokes and a uniform, slightly convex flan surface patinated with green verdigris. |
