Obverse description Quartered shield bearing the arms of Grand Master Jean de Vallette: the first and fourth quarters display a gyrfalcon and lion (Vallette family arms), while the second and third quarters bear the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St. John. The shield is the central device in the field, surrounded by the encircling legend. The design is characteristic of the hammered coinage of the Hospitaller Grand Masters of Malta.

Additional information

Jean de Vallette was Grand Master when the Ottoman fleet of Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Malta in 1565 — one of the most consequential naval engagements of the sixteenth century. The Order survived, barely, and de Vallette immediately began fortifying the island, founding the city that bears his name. This copper issue dates to the year that construction on Valletta began.

Copper carlines of this period circulated hard among laborers and soldiers funding and building that fortification effort, which accounts for their typical state of preservation today.
