Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered arms of Bologna — a cross with alternating segments — displayed on an ornate cartouche-style shield surmounted by a papal tiara and crossed keys, the traditional symbols of pontifical authority. The shield is flanked by elaborate foliate and scroll mantling. The circumferential Latin legend reads BONONIA DOCET, separated by six-pointed rosette stops, with the date 1674 appearing in the lower field beneath the shield. The overall composition is characteristic of late seventeenth-century Bolognese hammered coinage, exhibiting the irregular flan typical of the period.
