The Buzuk is one of several dozen complementary local currencies that proliferated across France following the 2014 ESS law (Loi sur l'Économie Sociale et Solidaire), which gave formal legal footing to monnaies locales for the first time. The Pays de Morlaix association launched it as a tool for keeping purchasing power within the local economy of the Finistère interior — one euro buys one Buzuk, redeemable only at participating member businesses.
The name comes from the Breton word for a type of traditional bagpipe. Not incidental — Breton cultural identity is woven into these schemes as deliberately as the economics.
