Obverse description The obverse field is entirely occupied by a multi-line Arabic inscription arranged in four horizontal registers, divided by ruled lines and flanked by stylised floral branch ornaments. The legend reads 'Sultan al-Barrayn wa Khaqan al-Bahrayn / al-Sultan Mahmud Khan / azzahu nasruh', proclaiming the titles and name of Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II (AH 1223–1252 / 1808–1839). The whole design is enclosed within a plain inner circle and a broad outer border of raised pellets.

Reverse description The reverse displays a central quatrefoil or four-lobed cartouche containing the Arabic mint and date inscription 'Duriba / fi Jazair / [AH date]', with the Hijri regnal year rendered in large Eastern Arabic numerals at the base of the cartouche. Delicate floral and foliate ornaments fill the four quadrants between the lobes of the cartouche. The design is surrounded by a plain inner circle and an outer border of uniformly spaced raised pellets, consistent with the obverse border treatment.
