| Obverse description | Crowned and armoured bust of James VI facing right, wearing an elaborately decorated cuirass with ruff collar visible at the neck, the effigy rendered in a bold hammered relief characteristic of early seventeenth-century Scottish goldsmith work. The king wears a jewelled crown surmounted by fleurs-de-lis and crosses pattée. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the royal legend arranged continuously around the periphery of the field. A thistle mintmark appears above the bust. The overall portrait conveys regal authority in a style transitional between late Tudor and early Stuart die engraving traditions. |
