| Obverse description | Bearded right-facing bust of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) occupying the majority of the field, depicted wearing the papal camauro and an elaborately ornamented cope decorated with floral and foliate motifs, including a prominent medallion at the clasp. The portrait is rendered with considerable naturalistic detail characteristic of Renaissance medallic art. The circumferential Latin legend reads PAVLVS III PONT MAX, interrupted by pellet stops, running along a beaded border. |
