| Obverse description | Bearded right-facing bust of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) occupying the majority of the field, depicted wearing the papal camauro and an elaborately ornamented cope decorated with floral and foliate motifs, including a prominent medallion at the clasp. The portrait is rendered with considerable naturalistic detail characteristic of Renaissance medallic art. The circumferential Latin legend reads PAVLVS III PONT MAX, interrupted by pellet stops, running along a beaded border. |

| Reverse description | A rampant lion facing left, holding a diagonal lance or standard in its forepaws, positioned centrally within a raised inner circle that serves as a border for the field. The lion, a traditional heraldic emblem of Bologna, is rendered in a vigorous, stylized manner consistent with mid-sixteenth-century Italian coinage. The circumferential Latin legend BONONIA MATER STUDIORVМ runs between the inner circle and an outer beaded border, referencing Bologna's historic status as seat of the oldest university in Europe. |
