Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal shield, displaying the five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern with bezants, set within a plain shield. A royal crown surmounts the shield. The mint mark letters D and O flank the shield in the left and right fields respectively, denoting the Damão to Diu attribution. The overall style is consistent with hammered coinage of the Portuguese Estado da India.

Reverse description The reverse displays the date divided into four quarters by a plain cross, with the numerals 1, 6, 7, and 8 (forming the year 1678) placed in the respective quadrants. The cross extends to the inner border, and the entire design is enclosed within a beaded or rope-pattern circular border. The numerals are rendered in a somewhat crude, hand-cut style typical of hammered Portuguese colonial copper coinage.
