Obverse description Central field features the Basel crosier (staff of the Bishop of Basel), the traditional heraldic symbol of the canton, rendered in relief and flanked symmetrically by elaborate foliate and scroll ornamentation. The design is enclosed within a decorative cartouche of rococo-influenced scrollwork. The circular legend MONETA REIPUB· BASILEENSIS runs along the periphery in Latin, denoting the coin as currency of the Republic of Basel. The coin's milled edge is visible at the border.
