| Obverse description | The quartered cantonal shield of Aargau occupies the centre of the field, its dexter half bearing horizontal wavy lines representing the River Aare, the sinister half divided into an upper section with a single six-pointed star and a lower section with two stars arranged in pale, all rendered in fine engraved detail. The shield is flanked by two symmetrical sprays of laurel and oak, tied at the base, resting on a plain horizontal line below which the denomination legend IO.RAP. appears in a recessed cartouche. The curved inscription CANTON ARGAU arcs around the upper field, separated by star stops, with additional star stops at the lower left and lower right periphery. |
