The Bastião — a Portuguese corruption of Sebastião — was struck at Goa during the reign of Dom Sebastião I, the young king whose catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578 killed him at twenty-four and left Portugal without a direct heir. That succession crisis culminated in the Iberian Union of 1580, when Philip II of Spain absorbed the Portuguese crown. Coins minted in Goa continued through 1581 under residual authorization before the new administration reorganized colonial currency.
