Additional information

Vlad II ruled Wallachia under the constant pressure of Ottoman suzerainty while simultaneously holding membership in the Order of the Dragon — the source of his epithet "Dracul." The coinage of his reign reflects that political instability directly: multiple type variants were issued across his interrupted rule, which saw him deposed and reinstated more than once between 1436 and 1447. Type Ib sits within that sequence of small fractional issues produced for a principality that was effectively a buffer state, paying tribute to Constantinople while nominally maintaining Christian allegiances to the west.
