Panama's Olympic commemorative program of the late 1980s was largely export-oriented — these coins were sold directly to collectors and rarely circulated domestically. The Balboa's fixed parity with the U.S. dollar, in place since 1904, meant Panama never developed strong numismatic traditions around its own coinage; American currency handled most day-to-day transactions anyway.
KM#90 is one of several issues Panama released for the Seoul Games, each featuring a different sport.
