| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the quartered heraldic shield of Pope Pius IX (Mastai-Ferretti), displaying diagonal bands and rampant lions in opposing quarters, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield is flanked by elaborate foliate mantling. The circular legend reads PIVS·IX·PON·MAX·ANNO·II· around the periphery. The engraver's initials N.C. (Niccolò Cerbara) appear at the bottom of the field beneath the shield. The overall composition follows the formal ecclesiastical heraldic tradition of the Papal States. |

| Reverse description | Plain field enclosed by an open olive wreath, the two branches rising symmetrically from a tied base at the bottom and meeting at the top without interlocking, their tips adorned with berries and leaves. Within the wreath, the denomination BAIOCCO is inscribed in two lines above the four-digit date. The mint mark R (for Rome) appears below the wreath at the bottom edge. The coin's border is defined by a continuous raised bead ring. The design is simple and legible, consistent with the utilitarian character of this copper circulation issue. |
