Obverse description Central field displays an upright fasces surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap, rendered in low relief. The fasces, a classical Roman symbol of authority here repurposed as an emblem of republican liberty, occupies the majority of the coin's field. The circumferential legend REPVBLICA ROMANA runs along the outer border in Latin characters, separated from the central device by a plain inner border. The coin's edge is encircled by a reeded or milled rim. The overall design is spare and emblematic, characteristic of the short-lived Roman Republic's revolutionary coinage.
