Additional information

Struck to commemorate Bhumibol Adulyadej's return to Thailand in 1950 after years of study and early reign spent largely in Switzerland, this issue reflects the monarchy's deliberate effort to reassert royal presence following the turbulent postwar period. Bhumibol had been crowned in absentia in 1946 after the sudden death of his brother Ananda, and his physical return carried considerable political weight during a decade when military factions were actively competing for legitimacy by aligning themselves with the crown.
