Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession — June 9, 1946 — this coin commemorates the longest reign of any monarch in Thai history at that point. Bhumibol had ascended under extraordinary circumstances: his brother, Ananda Mahidol, was found shot dead in the Grand Palace just weeks before, a death officially ruled accidental but never fully explained.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations of 1996 drew heads of state from across the world to Bangkok.
