Thailand hosted the 8th Asian Games in Bangkok in December 1978, the second time the country had served as host after the 1966 Games. The organizing committee issued this circulation commemorative to mark the occasion — a coin intended to pass through ordinary hands rather than sit in presentation sets.
Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej, was by 1978 the longest-reigning monarch among then-current heads of state, a fact that lent particular weight to his association with national occasions of this kind.
