Additional information

Rama IV — Mongkut — came to the throne in 1851 after spending 27 years as a Buddhist monk, during which he taught himself Latin and English and corresponded with Western heads of state. His reign marked Thailand's first serious engagement with European monetary conventions, and gold tikal-weight coinage of this period reflects that negotiation between traditional Siamese weight standards and the pressure of mid-19th century trade with Britain and China.

KM#134 is among the last issues struck using the traditional bullet or pod duang forming technique before Western-style milled coinage was introduced under his son Chulalongkorn.
