Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms (quinas shield) rendered in a simplified, provincial style characteristic of the Diu hammered coinage. The shield, bearing the five escutcheons arranged in a cross pattern each charged with five roundels, is surmounted by a crown. The overall execution is bold and somewhat crude, consistent with the local mint production of Portuguese India during the reign of Maria I.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description A bold cross pattée dominates the reverse field, dividing it into four quadrants. The date is distributed across the four quadrants of the cross, reading '17' in the upper two and '99' in the lower two, a typical arrangement for this series. The cross is rendered in high relief with plain arms, and the overall design is stark and unadorned, consistent with the hammered coinage of the Diu mint.
