Obverse description Facing crowned bust of Bishop Dietrich II Damerow rendered in crude medieval hammered style, occupying the central field. The face is depicted frontally with stylized features characteristic of Baltic ecclesiastical coinage of the late 14th century. The bust is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the central device.

Additional information

Dietrich II Damerow held the see of Dorpat from 1379 to 1400, governing a diocese wedged between the competing pressures of the Teutonic Order to the south and the trading interests of the Hanseatic League. The artig — a small silver denomination peculiar to the Baltic episcopal mints — circulated primarily as local small change within Livonian markets, where it competed with issues from Riga and Reval. Dorpat's episcopal coinage operated under periodic tension with the Order, which jealously guarded regional monetary authority.

The "with circle, regular legend" distinction from Haljak 494 separates this die from closely related varieties of the same reign — a granular classification that matters when assembling a complete type set of Damerow's output.
