| Obverse description | The Archangel Michael, rendered in the medieval Gothic tradition, is depicted facing right in full figure, standing over and piercing with a long cross-tipped spear the body of a dragon prostrate beneath his feet. The archangel is shown with large spread wings and wears armour, his right arm raised brandishing the spear downward into the creature. The scene is set within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin royal legend IACOBVS D G MAG BRI FRA ET HIB REX running continuously around the periphery between the inner and outer beaded borders. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays the royal Stuart arms quartered on a shield surmounted by a crown, the quarters showing the arms of England (three lions passant guardant), France (fleurs-de-lis), and Scotland (lion rampant), with the Irish harp in the fourth quarter, all enclosed within the radiating lines of a ship's hull rendered as a decorative surround. The crowned shield is flanked on either side by the fore and aft masts of a ship, recalling the traditional Angel type's naval associations. The Roman numeral 'I' appears above the shield denoting the denomination. The peripheral Latin legend A DNO FACTVM EST ISTVD ET EST MIRABILE IN OCULIS NRIS, a Scriptural quotation from Psalm 118:23, runs around the coin within beaded borders. |
