Additional information

William V of Hesse-Cassel minted this albus during the Thirty Years' War, a period when the landgraviate was actively engaged militarily on the Protestant side and under severe fiscal strain from quartering troops and paying contributions. Small silver coinage of this decade frequently shows irregular planchet preparation — a direct consequence of disrupted metal supply chains across the Hessian mints at Cassel and Schmalkalden.
