Obverse description Central field displays the rampant Palatinate lion, rendered in high relief with characteristic dynamic posture, facing left. The lion is depicted with elaborate mane and extended claws, occupying the majority of the coin's field. A Latin legend encircles the design within a beaded border, comprising the abbreviated titles and initials of Elector John William, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Arch-Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire. The border is defined by a prominent milled edge running the full circumference.
