Additional information

John Philip von Schönborn held the three most powerful ecclesiastical posts in the Holy Roman Empire simultaneously — Archbishop of Mainz, Archbishop of Würzburg, and Bishop of Worms — making him one of the most politically influential princes of the mid-seventeenth century. His tenure followed the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, and much of his coinage was issued to stabilize a regional monetary supply that had been badly debased and disrupted by decades of conflict and occupying armies.

The albus was a small-denomination silver coin rooted in Rhenish tradition, its name deriving from the Latin for "white" — a reference to the coin's silver content distinguishing it from billon issues.
