Obverse description Elaborately interlaced FR royal cypher of Landgrave Frederick I occupies the central field, the letters formed with ornate Baroque flourishes and scrollwork. The monogram is surmounted by a large electoral crown with arches and orb, rendered in fine detail. A small six-pointed star appears below the cypher in the lower field. The entire device is contained within a finely milled border of radiating denticles.

Reverse description The Hessian lion rampant to the left occupies the central field, crowned and with tail curled, rendered in the characteristic late Baroque heraldic style of the Hesse-Cassel mint. The denomination numeral appears in the field to the left of the lion, with the mint master's initials positioned in the exergue below. The design is encircled by a milled denticle border consistent with the obverse.
