Nadir Shah's reign lasted barely four years before his assassination in 1933, making all coinage of his rule relatively short-lived by issue. He came to power in 1929 after deposing Habibullah Kalakani — the "Baccha-e Saqao" — and this coin belongs to the first phase of his monetary reforms, which sought to stabilize an Afghan economy badly disrupted by the civil conflict that preceded his takeover. The .900 silver standard adopted here aligned Afghan coinage with contemporary international norms, a deliberate signal of legitimacy to foreign powers.
