Additional information

Kutch maintained its own coinage authority well into the 20th century, one of the few princely states permitted to continue striking coins under British paramountcy. These issues carry the dual acknowledgment of the local ruler — Vijayarajji, who acceded in 1942 — and George VI as suzerain, a bureaucratic balance the Political Department in Delhi enforced strictly across all remaining princely mints. Kutch's mint at Bhuj was among the last active princely mints in India, surviving until shortly before Independence rendered the arrangement obsolete.
