Additional information

Safi I inherited the Safavid throne in 1629 following the death of Abbas I — the dynasty's most capable ruler — and his reign was marked almost immediately by territorial erosion. The Ottomans retook Baghdad in 1638 after a siege of several months, a loss that effectively ended Safavid ambitions in Mesopotamia for good. Tabriz itself sat uncomfortably close to the Ottoman frontier throughout this period, making coinage from this mint a direct artifact of a state under sustained military and political pressure.

The A#2638 type classification distinguishes this issue from the earlier Abbasi fabric introduced under Abbas I.
