| Obverse description | The obverse field is entirely occupied by the Shi'a kalima in three lines of bold nastaliq script, reading: 'La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah / Ali wali Allah' (There is no god but God / Muhammad is the messenger of God / Ali is the friend of God). The inscription is set within an irregular flan characteristic of hammered Safavid coinage, with a floral or scrolling marginal border partially visible along the rim. The lettering is deeply struck in high relief, with the characteristic flowing, overlapping strokes of the nastaliq style. This Shi'a declaration of faith, incorporating acknowledgment of Imam Ali, is the defining theological feature of Safavid coinage and distinguishes it from Sunni Islamic issues. |
