Additional information

Conrad IV of Rietberg held the Osnabrück episcopate during a period when the bishopric's coinage rights were perpetually contested — the small-denomination silver fractions issued under his name circulated alongside issues from the city of Osnabrück itself, which maintained its own minting authority in an arrangement that generated chronic jurisdictional friction throughout the late 15th century. At 0.44 g, these eighth-schilling pieces were among the smallest silver struck in the region, and attrition rates were predictably brutal.
