Yahya ibn Muhammad Hamid ed-Din had only recently consolidated Zaydi Imamate control over the Yemeni highlands when this issue appeared, following the Ottoman withdrawal after World War I. The fractional riyal denominations he introduced were deliberately calibrated to integrate with the Maria Theresa thaler-based trade economy already entrenched in the region — a practical concession to commercial realities he otherwise had little interest in accommodating.
