Additional information

Zacatecas operated one of the most productive silver mines in the world during the early nineteenth century, yet the state mint struggled chronically with small-denomination coinage. This pattern was struck in 1833 as the newly independent Mexican states were still negotiating the boundaries between federal and local minting authority — Zacatecas being particularly assertive in that fight. Whether the octavo was ever seriously considered for circulation or existed purely as a bureaucratic proof of concept is unresolved; KM#Pn40 records no adopted successor.
