Additional information

Husayn bin Ali proclaimed himself King of the Hejaz in 1916 after launching the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule in June of that year, backed by British promises of an independent Arab state. These earliest bronze fractional issues were struck at the Constantinople mint before Husayn's forces had secured enough territorial control to establish their own minting infrastructure — a pointed irony given the revolt's anti-Ottoman character.
