Obverse description Central design features a stylised tree or plant motif flanked by two scrolling banners bearing the motto SPERO MELIORA, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The name LAIRD arches prominently across the upper field in bold raised letters. Below the central motif, the dual denomination is inscribed in two columns reading 1/8 PENNY and 1/400 DOLLAR, with the date 1858 displayed along the lower margin of the beaded circle. A raised rim with a wide flat border surrounds the entire design.

Reverse description Central field depicts a multi-masted sailing vessel under full sail, rendered in fine detail with rigging and hull visible, floating on stylised waves, all contained within a beaded inner circle. A small device or flag appears at the masthead. The Arabic Hijri year ١٢٧٤ (1274 AH) is inscribed below the ship within the beaded border. The wide flat rim surrounding the design is plain and unadorned, consistent with a trial or pattern strike.
