| Obverse description | Facing crowned bust of Bishop John of Arkel rendered in a stylised Gothic manner, depicted with a bearded visage and wearing an episcopal crown adorned with floral or trefoil finials. The bust is shown from the shoulders upward, with a vestige of a cross-pattee or ecclesiastical emblem visible at the base of the truncation. The effigy is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which the circumferential legend runs in uncial characters. The hammered fabric gives the flan a slightly irregular outline characteristic of mid-14th-century Low Countries ecclesiastical coinage. |
