Additional information

The Écu aux Huit L was introduced in 1724 as part of a broader monetary reform under the Contrôle Général des Finances, responding to the chronic instability that had followed the collapse of John Law's System in 1720. The eight interlaced L's in the design gave the series its name and distinguished it from the earlier Écu aux trois couronnes. This eighth-écu fraction was struck across multiple provincial mints simultaneously, making mint mark attribution essential — strike quality and planchet consistency vary considerably depending on the issuing atelier.
