Obverse description Plain field centered on a raised square frame surrounding the central square perforation, characteristic of traditional cash coin design. The circular legend PROTECTORAT DU TONKIN arcs around the upper portion of the coin, with the date 1905 inscribed along the lower periphery. Small decorative stops flank the date on either side. The lettering is bold and deeply struck in Latin capitals against a flat, unadorned field.
