Additional information

Frederick III ruled Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg during the Seven Years' War, and the 1761–62 date range on this issue places it squarely within the war's most financially punishing phase for the Thuringian states. Saxony was repeatedly occupied and stripped of resources by Prussian forces, and the smaller duchies scrambled to maintain viable coinage as silver supplies and minting capacity came under severe strain.

The .542 fineness reflects exactly this kind of wartime compromise — well below the standard the duchy had maintained in peacetime issues.
