| Obverse description | Central field features a wreath composed of wheat stalks on the left and an olive branch on the right, enclosing the denomination '1.500 000 LIRA' and the date '1997' in raised lettering. The Turkish crescent and star emblem appears at the top of the wreath, above the denomination. The circular legend 'TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ' runs along the outer border. A small mint mark is visible at the base of the wreath, below the date. |

| Additional information |
Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa — the Ottoman admiral who commanded the fleet at the Battle of Preveza in 1538, decisively defeating a Holy League force assembled by Charles V — was commemorated here during a period when Turkey was issuing a sustained run of high-denomination silver collector pieces to offset chronic inflation eroding the practical value of its base-metal circulating coinage. By 1997 the lira had depreciated so catastrophically that a face value of 1,500,000 was numerically enormous yet economically trivial, making the denomination essentially fictional for anything but collector purposes.
